Nutritional Profile of Goji Berry
There are so many health benefits of Goji Berry. The direct credit for its benefits goes to the nutritional profile which is not found in any other food or fruit. The nutrients of Goji Berry can be broadly divided into macronutrients and micronutrients. Macronutrients include carbohydrates (68%), proteins (12%), fats (10%) and dietary fibers (10%). The total calorific value of 100gm of dried berry is approximately 370 (kilo) Calories.
The dried Goji Berry also contains 19 amino acids including some essential amino acids. Also it contains 11 essential and 22 trace elements including Calcium (112mg/100gm), Potassium (1132mg/100gm), Iron (9mg/100gm), Zinc (2mg/100gm) and Selenium (50µg/100gm) etc. Selenium and Germanium are helpful in the treatment of cancer. Vitamins such as Vitamin B1, B2, B6, C and E are also found in appreciable amounts. It also contains carotenoids including β carotene, lutein, lycopene and xanthophyll. The carotene content of Goji Berry is higher than carrot which provides it good antioxidant property. Apart from this Goji berry contains polysaccharides, monosaccharide and unsaturated fatty acids including essential fatty acids such as Linoleum acid which promotes fat loss.
Scientific Studies Including Goji Berries
Goji berries have a long history in Chinese medicine and traditional food, spanning back over 6,000 years. Naturally, many studies involving goji berries have been performed at Chinese universities. The most well known study found goji berries to improve the health of cancer patients. But since then, further insight into the health properties of the goji berry has been made. The College of Public Health at Wuhan University tested the effects of goji extract in 2004. Diabetic rabbits were used as the subjects. Scientists found an increase in HDL (”good” cholesterol) and a reduction in blood glucose level. Then, in 2006, XingJiang Agriculture University compared the anti-oxidant effects of goji to vitamin C on aging mice. Polysaccharides in the berry helped compensate for the age-related decline in the mice’s immune system. On the flip side of testing, goji berries have also undergone scrutiny as a toxin. Atropine, a toxic alkaloid, occurs naturally in goji berries. (It is important to remember that even more traditional health foods can contain trace amounts of toxins — cyanide in almonds being a prime example.) In September 2006, scientists at the University of Graz in Austria tested goji berries grown in China and Thailand. The resulting atropine levels were found to be far below toxic levels. So, the goji berry can safely continue to enjoy its rise as a benefactor of health and prosperity.
My Personal Review
I started taking dried Goji Berry every morning and night since early this year. I watched a documentary on TV about it and decided to make it my regular health regime. Now, not only me, but my mom and my sisters are taking it too…
The way i do it, i blend it (about 2 tablespoons) with my milk or juice for breakfast and before i go to bed.
One prominent affect of Goji Berry is your digestion system. Also, it detoxes your whole body, which is good to keep your general health and to avoid any diseases…
A few researches claim that Goji Berry has the properties to avoid and cure/kill the cancer cells. This also explains why people who live around the Himalayan (natural habitat for the berry trees) has no record of major illnesses and most of them lived until over 100 years old!!!!
If you’re interested to try it, you can buy it at any chinese herbal store (tabib cina)…just ask for Goji Berry though some helbalists called it Keiji Berry. It’s very very cheap, you could get about half kilo of those for only RM10.
Give it a try…even though it taste a little funny, but it does magic to your body…
