Discover Your True Self (Part 2)

Morning all,

I don’t think i have said everything that i wanted to say in “Discover Your True Self Before Pursuing Fame Fortune”. So, i’m going to continue with the topic here….

People often have mistaken “self discovery” with “self recognition”. Self recognition is simply knowing who you are more on the outer surface; like i recognize myself as a Malay guy who has a degree in Chemical Engineering from United States and currently working as an Educational Consultant. Self recognition is more determining yourself based on your possessions, accomplishments and achievements.

Self discovery on the other hand is unwrapping who you truly are has a person. It is deeper than the outer layer. It involves your spiritual beliefs, your characteristics, your unique personality and your core values.

Embracing yourself through just “self recognition” would be disastrous. People often tend to change their perspectives and attitude after accomplishing success. Let’s face it, that is very true. We all can easily get arrogant and self-absorbed after achieving some amount of success.

Once we reach certain wage level, driving Perodua MyVi doesn’t seem so appropriate anymore…moreover, it could be embarrassing. After getting a promotion to be department manager, wearing G2000 to work seems to be so lame, and Banana Republic suddenly looks so tempting and affordable. Like others could see the difference between G2000 and Banana Republic.

Hence, keeping the posh yuppie lifestyle becomes harder and harder….we are always willing to spend alot of money to appear superior to others.

If we embrace ourselves through “self discovery”, we (in a sense of personality) on the other hand will become constant at all situations. No success and fame could make us ‘losing ourselves’. That is what i call a true genius: being able to always be who we really are despite many many surrounding temptations. No co-workers can make us feel embarrassed wearing discount shirt to work so that we could save more for our kids’ education, no buddies could talk us into buying bigger car if we don’t need to….

Like i said in the first part of this topic, self discovery is eminent…everyone SHOULD go through it. If you’re already above 30 and you still don’t think you have found your true self, then by all means induce the process. Take some time off from work to reevaluate yourself….buy self help books….reconnect with your hobbies….anything…anything that would help you finding yourself.

A man travels the world over in search of what he needs and returns home to find it. – George Moore
