One trend i don’t like that so-called “modern malay parents” do is giving their kids western names. Talk about pretentious!

I mean come on now, are we really lacking of good malay names? I doubt so.

It would be OK if one of the parents is actually a caucasian, but when both parents are malay, then it would become almost annoying.

Buat kena gelak dengan kawan2 jer nanti biler budak tuh dah besar. Konon tgk nametag nama Justin or Hazel, sekali tgk muka, melayu totok habis. Tak ker kelakar tuh?

Banyak pon nama melayu yang kinda modern dan sedap didengar. Contoh nyer nama Zara or Danial, both are considered Malay names and they both sound so soothing to the ears.

Kot yer pon mmg tak suker langsung nama melayu, letak ler nama yang Middle Eastern instead of Westerner. I personally mmg suker nama2 Arab nih…sebab makna yang baik2, sedap didengar dan exotic but appropriate enough to be used by us malay people.

Bukan ker lagik baik tuh. Ini nama letak Alexandriana, kesian pak cik yang nak ukir nama tuh dalam jawi untuk batu nisan masa mati esok….sure dier tension jer pikir nak translate nama tuh dalam jawi. Haih….

Sorry lah, bukan nak kutuk….just stating my personally preference and opinion. Tak terasa ker macam poser kasi nama anak nama omputih….sekali tgk muka, hampeh….tak nampak mixed langsung…hehehe….nak nak lagik kalau besar nanti, budak tuh tak fasih English….aduh, kesian giler….nama orang putih, tapi muka melayu, pastuh English pon patah riuk….huhuhu….kesian kesian….

Exotic names do come with HUGE expectations, doesn’t it? So think hard before you give a name to your child Nama melayu cukup lah, dol…

I went to watch 2012 with Malin last night at Pavilion. Thanks Malin for belanja wayang….sorry ler lepas nih aku busy nak gi tgk wayang, so takleh nak belanja balik LOL!!

Great movie. I didn’t fall asleep at all through the entire movie! LOL!

The movie made me think about what i would do and what i would save when the end of the world has finally come. Hmmm….tough questions to answer…

All in all, i was very happy to finally manage to get the ticket to see the movie. It was a great movie

3 more years to repent!!! LOL!!!

Lately, i’ve been feeling like i just lost my momentum to blog. Maybe due to my busy week…or maybe due to the fact that i am currently sick and don’t have much energy….or maybe simply due to laziness!!!

Whatever it is…..i hope this will be temporary….i don’t ever want to stop blogging….i love to share stories with those who care….and also to those who don’t! LOL!

I need to re-shave my head before i go back to my hometown. Need to put that in my “To-Do” list…

Other than that, i am very happy lately, even though my health is not at its best level…but it seems like i just got a new ’spirit’ after changing my place….

Today i had a busy but good day…

I woke up super early today…at 5.45 am…i had to be at Bandar Tun Razak by 7.45 am and i had to get there by public transportation. Luckily, to my surprise, there was actually a bus which passed by my apartment to Wangsa Maju LRT Station.

Alhamdulillah, i managed to get to BTR on time. The program went so smoothly. As part of my job, i had to smile and mingle around with parents. Hehehe.

Today i finally met my other housemate who i hadn’t met before. He was away during the weekend when i moved in. His name is Rio and he’s a Chemical Engineer. What do you know? I guess there will be a lot of things to talk about with him in the future.

Now i am just taking my relaxing time updating my blog while listening to “Eat, Pray, Love” audiobook. I’ve read the book once last year but listening to the audiobook is totally a different experience. I love it!

I keep thinking about my hometown today. I really can’t wait to go home this weekend. Can’t wait to show my family my invention, Gooey Slime kit! I bet they will be so proud of me Can’t wait to see Fatin and Taufeeq.

I have to say, it feels so refreshing to have a chance to start a new life. I am very happy now. Getting rid of old routine and eliminated some “sampah sarap” in my life never felt so good. No more ‘that’….i gave attention to ‘that’ for so long for what? Nothing! Kacang lupakan kulit! Now, i take back my forgiveness and i don’t even care a single bit anymore….i’m free

I’m gonna sleep so well after this…hehehe

This week i am managing a workshop for Ardent Edu….talk about stress and hectic day!!!

I’ll be going back to my hometown for Eid this Thursday morning…

Can’t wait to see Fatin and Taufeeq. Fatin called me last night, and she told me she couldn’t wait to see his Pak Lee. She’s only 2….and she already knew how to ask her mom to help her call me….hehehe….

This kinda thing makes me want to have my own baby so soon!!!!

Glee is an American musical comedy-drama television series that airs on Fox. It focuses on a high school show choir (also known as a glee club) set within the fictional William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio.

I slept around 2 am last night….cleaning and unpacking…

This morning i woke up at 6 am…did my Subuh prayer and continued with my unpacking….Oh yeah, i had to assemble a computer desk as well….boy, it was hard to assemble a furniture using manual tools and you didn’t have anyone to help you….you’d wish there was someone else to help you to hold one part while you needed to screw another….

Anyway, finally, i managed to finish ALL my unpacking….phew!! Talk about a big relief!!

Malin will come to see my apartment at around 12.30 pm and i will have lunch with him at Wangsa Walk….

I will definitely post some photos of my humble new apartment soon….

Now i just need to shower (LOL!) and i want to take a walk around my new neighborhood. Later this afternoon, i will go for a jog…yay!!!

Cory skyped me this morning as well…and i gave him a tour to my new apartment….he liked it. Hehehe….

So excited with this change….it turned out great after all….Alhamdulillah….

Alhamdulillah, i am finally moved in to my new apartment

This topic is a little bit controversial but i was asked to cover this topic…so, i just wrote my own opinion at the time…..

Boys Have To Be Boys, Girls Have To Be Girls (Written on October 21, 2002 – Monday)

Gender plays such an important role in several contexts of life. For example, gender is the primary element in cultural construction; it seems like we all ought to know which ways of being “gendered” are considered illegitimate, wrong and ugly. Moreover, gender also is the component of relationship structuring process.

Gender socialization is strongly enforced throughout the life span and it starts from the earliest part of life. That means, wherever we go, we have to “bring” our gender with us. Not just we have to bring it with us all the time, we have to bring it ‘correctly’. In other words, each of us (both men and women) is expected to show all the characteristics of our gender as it supposed to be. Simplest way to say, boys have to be boys and girls have to be girls.

We already heard so many heart-rending stories about people who being cursed and abused because they didn’t behave as their genders supposed to look like. For instance, a boy in my country had been abused by his parents just because he liked to wear and behave like a girl. He suffered from severe cuts and burns all over his body with many old scars were found as well. This is only one of millions of cases around the world where some people have to pay a great price since they try to be like their opposite sexes. The concepts of gender norms and gender roles are seemed like to be the most crucial things that all of us have to focus on as early as we are capable enough to make our own decisions. Actually, we don’t really have other choice; we are expected by surrounding people to behave according to our biological gender, by hook or by crook.

I personally think that we should accept our gender as it is and ‘constantly’ behave as it supposed to be like. Men usually must appear to be more independent, self reliant, dominant and assertive meanwhile women should be seen as more gentle, understanding, affectionate and tactful kinda people. However, it is also unfair to blame and curse people who try to be their opposite sexes. People who are transexual, gay, lesbian, tomboy or sissy boy absolutely should not receive any form of discrimination or abuse. Like other “normal” people, they are just expressing what they all have to say from their hearts. The thing is that their feelings are quite diverging from what we usually expect to see from other people. Maybe it is hard for some of us to accept this kind of scenario (or more like taboo) but there is nothing we can do. Moreover, it is obviously not our right to tell others what to do and we will never have that kind of right. Indeed, all we have to do is to try to be more open minded, there is nothing wrong to have those kind of ‘diverging’ people in our community.

Besides cursing and blaming some people who are trying to be different, why don’t we help ourselves to be more accepting. I think those people are already in the battle of their own emotions in order to find their identities. Therefore, let’s not put more burden in their lives by rejecting them out from our community. Treat them like other “normal” people so that they won’t feel isolated or being abandoned. They deserve the same amount of respect as human beings.

Although boys have to be boys and girls have to be girls, we also have to be kind and affectionate to others, don’t we?

Back in college, during my Fall 2002 semester, i took one very interesting class to fulfill my elective Social Science curriculum requirement. The class is called Family Social Science 1101 : Intimate Relations.

Can you believe it, there’s a class at my college to learn about intimacy!! LOL!!

At first, i registered for the class just because it was the only social science class that was fit for my busy schedule. Little that i knew the class was very challenging.

The class was divided into groups of 10 each. Somehow i was grouped with 9 American chicks who happened to be the loudest girls in the class!! Just my luck, eh? At that time, i was still kinda awkward when it comes to interacting with American people, especially girls!!

Boy, was i being bullied big time by those girls. Because they knew i was very shy, they always teased me by asking alot of sex-related questions….they also always tried to hug me and sit on my lap. They were definitely a bunch of clowns. Always tried to put some “blushing” on my face. LOL!!

Each week, we got to learn about one aspect of intimacy: Intimacy between men and women in general, between parents and childrens, between friends, etc.

The main project for the class (which covered the highest chunck of % of the final score) was to write a compilation of at least 100 essays by the end of the semester. 100 ESSAYS WORTH OF AT LEAST 2 PAGES EACH!!!

The essays should reflect personal lived experience and show significant signs of self reflection.

To my surprise, i got one of the highest scores in the class….despite my heywire grammar at the time….i managed to score 92/100 for the final project.

My lecturer even wrote a little note on the evaluation score sheet :

“Mohamad,

I only wish we could have heard your voice more in the class. You have an authentic depth to your writing. Nice use of metaphor. Your father can smile down at you, you’re such a good son!”

My lecturer personally came to me and told me how delightful she felt reading my 100 essays. She also said she didn’t expect it from the most quiet guy in the class. Hehehe….

So, today, i want to share one of the 100 essays that i wrote for the project. This particular essay is actually the first essay in the complication, serves as an introduction. Here we go :

Blurry About ‘Intimacy’

After 2 weeks of several discussions and pages of ideas in “The Dance of Intimacy” and “The Psychology of Intimacy”, i still don’t know how to ‘beautifully’ extract the definition of intimacy in one complete sentence. Obviously, i am not a Dr. Love nor something to claim that my perception is absolutely correct. However, i believe every relationship expert also might say that the definition of intimacy is so broad and subjective. Each person has different thought about it, based on the experiences and knowledge. For instance, a 20 years married husband and wife would give a different perception about intimacy than a “just broken up” couple. Therefore, there is no exact definition of intimacy, but that doesn’t mean it can be anything.

Intimacy, for me, is all about commitment and the deepest feeling of love. Liking or admiring someone (something like the very first crush) is totally not included in the context of intimacy. It’s just the first or starting point that might lead someone to the ‘world’ of intimacy (or a long term relationship). Intimacy is more in a stage when mutual understanding, trust, care ness and passion have been achieved or nearly reach the climax. It doesn’t have to be some kind of sexual connection (although it is part of intimacy);  sometimes a relationship without sexual connection can also be interpreted as an intimate relationship. As an example, a close bonding between friends, where sharing secrets and emotions becomes common, is one of examples of intimate relationship even though there is no sexual connection involved. Thus, the concept of intimacy is further beyond the sexual angle. It involves a mixture of warm and positive feelings that leads to comfortness and close attachment (physically and emotionally).

Based on my personal observation and experience, i think the 30 years marriage between my mom and my late dad is the greatest ‘intimate relationship’ i have ever seen. Jut several days before i lost my dad, my mom said to me that she didn’t want to drop a tear if God took my dad from us because she knew that dad’s soul would always be in her heart. Moreover, my dad also told my mom that he couldn’t think a better woman than my mom to be his wife. After 9 months my dad passed away, my mom still keeps talking all the good things about my dad and that makes her feel the presence of him. I have to admit that after i lost my dad, i’ve learned alot about values in “husband and wife” relationship. That was why i ended up taking this couse to extend my understanding.

There is so much to write about intimacy, at some point i myself tend to get confused on what to be discussed and how to put my idea nicely into words. Indeed, intimacy itself is a complicated thing and the only way to explore it is purely through experience. Books can only draw and organize the theories but to understand it, we all have to live in it. Each experience that we gain, we have to relate it with the concept of intimacy. Make all memories and experiences as our guidelines and the future as our opportunity to make up for things we have done wrongly in the past.

Well, that is how to ‘understand’ intimacy for me, if there was really a way to do it….

So, i received a call regarding the result of my health check up the other day.

Alhamdulillah, nothing serious after all.

The test confirms that i have Hypokalemia which is commonly known as electrolyte imbalance. It is basically that my body fluid doesn’t contain enough amount of potassium.

Hypokalemia is caused by excessive loss of potassium from both the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and from the kidney. The excessive loss may have been caused by several reasons.

Doctor suggested me to take more red meat and also potassium supplement. Also, doctor said i should include bananas on my daily diet for the next few months.

Come to think about it, i have not been eating red meat regularly. I don’t like red meat so i don’t eat it often. But from now on, i have to make effort to eat more red meat.

Well…what a relief…kinda…hehehe….

Menurut pemerhatian saya sejak beberapa tahun yang lalu, di kalangan rakan sebaya saya (mid-20s) ada dua kelemahan yang besar, iaitu:

1. Tidak suka dikritik;
2. Takut tidak disukai oleh orang lain.

Ini bukanlah spesifik kepada umur saya sahaja (manusia mana yang suka dikritik, dan semua orang mahu disayangi oleh orang lain), tetapi kelemahan-kelemahan ini adalah lebih kronik pada orang di peringkat umur saya. Hipotesis saya ialah, mereka bersifat demikian kerana mereka masih kurang berpengalaman (kurang duit, kurang pengaruh, kurang kuasa dan kurang segala-galanya), tetapi mereka terpaksa melalui kehidupan dunia sebenar yang penuh dengan sepak terajang dan panca roba. Jadi secara semulajadi mereka bersifat defensif, dan menerima kritikan dan ketidaksukaan orang secara peribadi, bukan secara profesional atau rasional.

Tidak suka dikritik

Semua orang suka dipuji. Bila dipuji, anda menjadi kembang. Apabila kecil, kita disuapkan dengan pujian. Ada yang dipuji terus menerus sepanjang tempoh persekolahan dan pengajian, kerana pencapaian akademik dan akhlak yang baik. Bagi yang hensem dan cantik, sering dipuji oleh rakan sebaya. Oleh itu, pelajar yang baru graduate universiti mempunyai satu mindset yang menyatakan mereka perlu dipuji bila membuat suatu benda yang baik atau berperangai baik. Ini bukanlah cara dunia sebenar berfungsi.

Di dunia sebenar, anda jarang dipuji. Tiada siapa akan kagum dengan pencapaian anda di sekolah dan universiti, walaupun anda CGPA 4.00 dan jadi pelajar contoh. Perangai yang dianggap baik ketika di sekolah, kini dicerca oleh orang lain. Contoh, budak-budak yang berperangai lebai ketika di sekolah dan didewa-dewakan oleh pelajar lain sebagai alim, bila masuk alam pekerjaan siaplah kena perli dengan boss, makcik kerani dan co-worker yang lain. Bagi mereka yang bersifat ‘cool’ di sekolah dan universiti, mempunyai ramai geng, dan pengaruh kumpulan yang kuat (dianggap ‘legend’), siaplah kau, tak ada siapa kisah pasal kau budak muda bila kau mula kerja nanti. Pegi buat kopi untuk makcik kerani tu, wahai lagenda sekolah asrama. Keseluruhan nilai (value) pada alam remaja dan alam dewasa adalah terbalik.

Oleh kerana ramai anak muda yang fikirannya tersangkut di alam remaja, mereka tertinggal jauh di alam pekerjaan walaupun mereka seorang yang cemerlang di sekolah dan universiti dulu. Hanya mereka yang pandai belajar selok-belok politik orang dewasa sahaja yang boleh meluncur laju bersama orang-orang yang lebih senior dari mereka. Orang-orang sebegini saya respek, kerana mereka telah melalui transition yang lancar dari alam remaja ke alam dewasa. Tidak hairan lah sekarang ada ramai pengarah-pengarah syarikat besar yang muda, manager-manager muda, ahli perniagaan muda, malahan jutawan-jutawan muda. They have figured out the adult game while their peers are still reminiscing about the fun and carefree days.

Salah satu sifat orang dewasa ialah mempunyai telinga yang tebal. Anda mestilah sedia untuk dikritik, dan merasa seronok atau bersyukur apabila diberi kritikan. Jika anda telah mencapai martabat tersebut, tahniah, anda adalah orang dewasa. Jika anda kena kritik, kemudian terus pegi blog dan terus tulis entry lepas geram (bitching) kepada boss atau co-worker anda, anda masih bermentaliti kanak-kanak. In this world, nobody owe you or your self-esteem anything. If you can’t handle the heat, go play with the kids and leave us adults alone.

Telinga tebal adalah penting untuk kejayaan. Ingatlah, apa saja kita buat, kita akan dikritik. APA SAHAJA. Tiada pengecualian. Anda mungkin menganggap anda disukai ramai, tapi percayalah ada lebih sepuluh orang mengkritik anda di belakang anda. Semua pemimpin hebat dalam politik, agama, sosial dan sebagainya, dikritik berjuta-juta kali sepanjang hidup mereka. Tak payah tengok pemimpin-pemimpin agung, tengok AJK Rukun Tetangga tempat anda tinggal pun kena kritik. You, yes YOU, will be criticized, whatever you do. Ingat cerita pasal lelaki yang berjalan dengan anaknya bersama seekor keldai.

Oleh kerana kita akan dikritik walaupun apa yang kita buat, apa kata kita cuba sukakan diri kita terhadap kritikan. Jangan cepat menangis, atau bergetar suara bila kena kritik. Take it with your back straight and your head up. Jangan cepat bitchy atau geram. Jangan terus soksek dengan kawan, sebarkan fitnah kepada orang yang mengkritik kita. Don’t take it personally. Take it as a challenge to make your self better.

Ada juga kritikan yang tidak berguna langsung. Untuk kritikan-kritikan ini, anggaplah ia sebagai lalat yang menyibuk, ‘minor annoyance’ sahaja. Jangan biarkan ia menyusahkan hati anda. Jika anda cepat susah hati pasal kena kritik, nanti anda cepat stres dan tekanan darah anda naik. Kalau anda tidak berusaha supaya mengabaikan kritikan-kritikan bodoh ini, otak anda akan digelumangi dengan perkara sia-sia yang membuang masa, tenaga dan sel otak anda.

I can safely say that I am quite immune to criticisms, even harsh ones. I thank people who give me constructive criticisms, and I give a “fuck you” to those who are simply being mean. I won’t let anything people say bother me. The reward: I sleep VERY soundly at night.

Takut dibenci oleh orang lain

Ini adalah berkait rapat dengan perkara di atas. Jika kritikan mungkin berniat baik atau jahat, tapi orang yang membenci atau tidak suka dengan anda sudah pastilah berniat jahat.

Perkara pertama yang perlu kita sedar ialah setiap orang, mempunyai beberapa orang yang tidak suka terhadap dirinya. Ini juga tiada kecuali. Anda mungkin menganggap anda disukai oleh semua orang, tapi hakikatnya ada orang yang membenci anda. Sama ada benci kerana cemburu, kerana anda poyo, kerana anda bermulut besar, kerana anda mat atau minah kepoh, kerana anda curi awek/balak dia, kerana anda tak boleh percaya, kerana anda bermuka huduh, atau saja-saja benci. Pendek kata, ada 1001 sebab kenapa orang benci kepada kita. Jangan perasan tak ada orang benci kepada kita. Memang ada, tapi mungkin anda tak kenal siapa.

Saya pun tak tahu siapa yang benci saya, tapi saya tahu mereka wujud. Ini kerana menurut ‘law of reciprocity’, disebabkan saya benci ramai orang, mesti ada orang benci saya. Tapi sekurang-kurangnya, saya menyedari hakikat tersebut, bukannya hidup dalam denial, “semua orang suka kat saya”.

Oleh itu, adalah membuang masa jika anda cuba memuaskan hati semua orang atau menyukakan semua orang. Jika anda pemimpin, lagi teruk. Anda akan jadi macam Pak Lah, terlalu sibuk membuatkan orang suka kepada beliau, sehingga akhirnya semua orang jadi menyampah. Berbanding dengan TDM yang dibenci seluruh dunia pada tahun 1998/1999 tapi sekarang dianggap pemimpin ulung. Ingat, janganlah sibuk nak bagi orang lain suka (appeaser) nanti lama-lama anda jadi pencacai orang lain.

Kita mestilah tegas dan berpendirian dalam urusan harian kita, baik di pejabat mahupun di rumah, baik peribadi mahupun organisasi, baik dalam agama atau dalam kehidupan dunia. Jangan jadi pencacai. Kita mesti berfikiran rasional dan bukannya bergantung kepada emosi semata-mata. Kadangkala, langkah terbaik yang kita ambil akan menyebabkan orang membenci kita. Kita kena berani kerana benar.

Jika anda rasa susah hati bila orang tak suka, atau cepat menangis, atau cepat tension, atau cepat depressed, ini maknanya anda masih kanak-kanak dari aspek mental dan emosi. Orang dewasa kena tegas dengan pendirian. Kalau benda yang betul, tapi orang lain tak suka, kena buat juga. Persetankan orang lain. Fuck people.

My respond to this topic : When it comes to my personal life, sometimes i do care about what others think of me. But when it comes to work / professional life, i really couldn’t care less. I am fine with being criticized, as long as i know i am right.
